A land that spreads between the mountains and the sea, the Abruzzo offers to who wants to cross it a wide range of itineraries: arts, culture, craftmanship, food and wine, masterpieces, monuments, Romanic churches and castles, ancient necropolis and Museums, hermitages and fortified villages.

Medieval villages

The Abruzzo has a lot of Medieval villages, among the most beautiful in Italy: among them, Anversa degli Abruzzi, Carunchio, Guardiagrele, Introdacqua, Pacentro, Pettorano sul Gizio, Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Scanno... visit them all: you will feel like you are living in an ancient era.

Food and Wine

Land of agriculture and pastoralism, the Abruzzo offers a wide range of scents and smells. Woods, fertile pastures and hills give birth to products that are wisely worked by the hand of the man and that are turned into drinks and food with a very unforgettable taste.

Always more appreciated are the Abruzzese wines, not only in Italy: among them there are the white Trebbiano and the red Montepulciano. All the Region, thanks to the mild climate, offers ideal conditions to let the growth of strong grapevines from which are then made unique wines.

The typical Abruzzese cooking is based on homemade pasta : "maccheroni alla chitarra", so called because this kind of pasta is made by using a typical wood loom with iron cords (just like a guitar). Typical is also the "cardone", a soup meat based with cardoon, eggs and meat balls.

Meat has a great importance in the Abruzzese cooking: above all the lamb and the castrated (adult male of the sheep), that are grilled or cooked in the oven. Really known and appreciated are the "arrosticini", little pieces of meat cooked on a spit, once eaten by the sheperds, nowadays appreciated from the mountains to the beach! On the coast it is typical the "brodetto", a delicious soup with sea food, scampi, codfish, goatfish, scorpionfish, mullet and smooth-hound with olive oil, tomato, garlic and pepper.

Among the traditional Abruzzese sweets: the typical sugared almonds from Sulmona, made following an ancient recipe of the 1700; the "parrozzo", typical of Pescara and so called by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio in the early '900 and the "mostaccioli" from L'Aquila.


The most important museums in Abruzzo, where are collected Medieval pieces of art, evidences, modern art pieces, are in Chieti (National Archeological Museum), Pescara (the house of Gabriele D'Annunzio, Civic Museum "Basilio Cascella"; Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo), Picciano (Museum of Agricultural Traditions and Arts) and Sulmona (Civic Museum).
